American sociologist Paul H. Ray proposed the concept of LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) in 1998. In recent years, groups of LOHAS consumers have emerged in many countries. These people value health, the environment, and social justice, eat organic foods, and avoid polluting the earth. Such lifestyles have been pushing forward the development of organic farMming and environmental protection technologies.

Moreover, in 2007, the Nobel Prize Committee announced on October 12th that the Nobel Peace Prize would be jointly shared by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former US Vice President Al Gore. This prize is awarded to commend their dedication in establishing and promoting a knowledge of climate changes caused by humans, which has laid down the foundation for solutions needed to fight against these changes.

From this, we can see that the world has come to a mutual understanding that current conditions of serious pollution and environmental damage will continue and high demands on protecting the environment will become a future trend. Taitung County is an “early adopter” in this issue; our outstanding mountains, water, and air bear witness to our local environment’s low rate of damage and zero pollution.
