First wine village opens in Taitung, Magistrate Ku

On September 7 the first licensed wine village in Taitung County, Cyuhe Wine Village, opened for business at Beinan Township. County Magistrate Kuang Li-zhen and Legislator Huang Chien-ting, along with around a hundred farmers, attended the opening event and expressed their congratulations to the wine village.

Magistrate Kuang promised members of the wine village that the county government will help wine farmers to set up more wine villages. He pledged that they will make efforts to improve the infrastructures of rural farming villages, combining agriculture and tourism resources to promote agricultural tourism.

Cyuhe Wine Village was founded by members of the Mingfeng Farming & Sales Squad led by Liao Kun-lang. Liao said the farming squad had applied for a wine-making license in July 2004, but it was not approved until June 25 this year. The new wine village, Liao said, will produce plum wine, loquat wine, sweet osmanthus wine, cinnamon wine and rice wine.

Taitung County has a total of 1,600 hectares of area planted with plum trees, and in 2006 the county government ceased harvesting from unattended plum trees because the crop was non-competitive. The county government then determined to follow the European experience of developing agricultural tourism by setting up wine villages or farming villages to improve the revenues of farmers.

After Magistrate Kuang and Legislator Huang oversaw a ribbon cutting ceremony for the wine village, farming team leader Liao guided Magistrate Kuang and other guests on a tour around the wine village. Liao explained the wine-making process and how the wine was bottled and packed. The visiting guests enjoyed a taste of sweet osmanthus wine and cinnamon wine, and all commended the quality of the wines produced by Cyuhe Wine Village.
