Taitung County Government Visits South Korea to Promote Tourism
Date: 2016-03-04
Since the number of visitors from China could significantly drop, Taitung County Magistrate Justin Huang brought a team to a tourism promotional conference in Seoul, South Korea on March 3 to promote Taitung in that country for the first time ever. With the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bureau of Tourism, over 20 travel agencies, airlines, and media outlets were invited by the Taitung County Government to sign an agreement with Taiwan to help expand Taitung’s tourism.

It is believed that the number of visitors from China will drop sharply by one-third, seriously impacting businesses that rely on such travelers. However, according to the Bureau of Tourism, the number of visitors from South Korea increased from over 240,000 in 2011 to 650,000 in 2015, making it the Asian country that has produced the greatest growth in the last five years in terms of incoming tourists. It is also the first Asian country to double regarding numbers of visitors. Riding this Korean wave, the Taitung County Government Tourism Department went to the mature market of Seoul to promote Taitung.

Joseph Shih, Taiwan’s representative to South Korea, described Taitung at the conference in this way: “Taitung is the most amazing place in Taiwan with great potential in terms of promoting international tourism. Visitors from Korea love Taitung’s beautiful mountains, landscape, and virtue. In recent surveys of Korean visitors to Taiwan, Taitung was found to be their favorite destination.” Magistrate Huang stated, “Taitung is a totally new travel destination for Koreans. Many Koreans have never even heard of it, and that is why we are here. Taitung has been the hottest tourist destination in Taiwan in recent years. Whether you’re talking about hot air balloons, surfing, cycling, or triathlons, all are very popular. The number of tourists reaches 6 million annually. The international tourism trend now is to look for the most natural and relaxing travel modes, and Taitung offers a travel value that is world-class.”

Those at the conference were very interested in Taitung’s hot springs, indigenous culture, and hot air balloon events, and they were quite impressed by the brief introduction of Taitung given by the County Government team. Some decided to form a group to visit Taitung for a firsthand experience. The Taitung County Government will continue to push tourism based on hot air balloons, surfing, sports tourism, hot springs, local crops, and local food in the hopes of making Taitung the number one destination for Koreans visiting Taiwan.
