Welcome the New Year with Bikini Beach Run and Concert at Taimali Beach

In addition to the 5th New Year’s Day Bikini Beach Run in Taimali Township, this year will also see a concert by the Taipei Philharmonic Caprice Sextet held at the Sunrise Park in an added move at welcoming in the first rays of sunlight of 2016.

The New Year’s Day Bikini Beach Run, organized by the Taimali Township Hall, will be held on the clean, sandy beach of Taimali for the fifth year as a symbol of hope for the new year. This event is now the most popular venue in Taiwan for making wishes at the beginning of each year.

Taimali Township Warden Cheng Zhengjun stated that in addition to the excitement of the run, the wonderful, serene music of the Taipei Philharmonic Caprice Sextet will fill the air as the beauty of dawn approaches.

The event will begin at 5:00 a.m. with an indigenous dance performance, followed by the concert at 5:20. Then, people will bask in the first rays of the new year and participate in a flag-raising ceremony between 6:30 and 6:50. After that, warm-ups will begin for the bikini beach run, which will continue until 11:00.

The songs to be played by the sextet will be many and diverse. Songs to be played include the following Taiwanese folk songs: “Four Seasons in Red”, “Peach Blossom Village”, “Longing for the Spring Breeze”, “Glutinous Rice Dumplings”, “Northwest Rain”, “Moonlight Sorrow”, “Flowers of the Rainy Night”, “Farewell at the Harbor”, “Melody of Hengchun”, “Bon Voyage”, and “Green Island Serenade”. Classical pieces include: “Salut d’Amour” and “Pomp and Circumstance March” by Elgar, “Morning Mood” from the play Peer Gynt, “The Thunderer” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by Sousa, “The Marriage of Figaro” by Mozart, “Libiamo” by Verdi, the Italian classic “O Sole Mio”, the Christian classic “Amazing Grace”, the Chinese classic “Butterfly Lovers”, “Laputa: Castle in the Sky”, and music from Bernstein’s Broadway hit West Side Story.

The Council of Indigenous Peoples, the National Taitung Living Art Center, and the Taitung County Government are the organizers of the event. The event coordinators are the Taitung Urban Rural Athletic Association and the Taitung County Art Development Association. The co-organizers of the event are the Taitung County Council, the Taimali Township Representative Council, the Taitung County B&B Association, police and fire stations in Dawu and Taimali, the Taimali Public Health Center, development associations and clubs from various communities, and the NTTU Blue Whale Club.
