Taitung’s Hot Air Balloon Makes International Friends at Balloon Fiesta in Saga, Japan!
Date: 2015-10-28
The International Balloon Fiesta in Saga, Japan, the biggest such event in Asia, began on October 30. Director Jiang Huiqing of the Taitung County Government Tourism and Culture Department and Taitung’s flight team have brought Taitung’s balloon to the event. This will be the first time for Taiwan to participate in a world-class competition, and it is a chance to accumulate points for next year’s FAI World Hot Air Balloon Championship. In addition to Taitung’s hot air balloons being available for flight all year long, participation in this event symbolizes Taitung’s advance to international standards. Taitung hot air ballooning is sure to become firmly rooted in Taiwan while keeping its sights on the world!

The balloon that was invited to participate in the event is called “Children’s Joy” (serial number B-00001), which was also the first balloon to acquire legal status in Taiwan. The envelope of the balloon is illustrated with a picture of cute, childlike sentiment selected from drawings by students from five elementary schools in the East Rift-Valley area. This balloon already has a history of serving as an ambassador. It has gone to balloon events in Canberra and Vietnam (2013) and Malaysia and the Philippines (2014). Furthermore, while the Taiwan International Balloon Festival was underway, the Children’s Joy balloon also went to the International Balloon Festival of Saint Jean-sur-Richelieu in Quebec, the European Balloon Festival in Spain, the Balloons over Waikato event in New Zealand, and the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in the US. No matter where the Children’s Joy Balloon goes, it is always adored by balloon fans young and old.

This balloon was purchased by the Taitung County Government in 2014. Operation of the balloon was commissioned to the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) by the Ministry of Economic Affairs as a way to promote Taiwan and its products to the world. Having participated in events held in countries such as the Netherlands, the US, and Thailand, the balloon continues to promote Taiwan to the world.

Since the first hot air balloon event was held in 2011, the industry has gradually taken root in Taitung. Through the hard work of the Taitung County Government and Taitung’s flight team, the balloons not only create joy for countless tourists, they also serve to endorse Taiwan to the world. With every inflation and flight of Taitung’s hot air balloons, Taitung gains more intimacy with the rest of the world.
